Night at the Museo

Sunday, December 26, 2010

The incredible Prado is free some evenings, so we decided to join in the craziness… and well worth it.  It was a nice evening of revisiting some old, old friends.  This was also our first time seeing the new extension (built in 2007 by Moneo).

One of our favorite paintings at the Prado is Velasquez’ 1656 painting Las Meninas. We love how it creates this uncertain relationship between the characters, the artist and us, the viewers.  It’s powerful, conceptual and beautiful.  This is the very first picture we took at the baggage claim in Barajas airport when we arrived in Madrid.  We were amazed how a 17th century painting can still inspire people in contemporary times.

We weren’t allowed to take any pictures inside the museum.  But we managed to sneak a picture of the register with our spy camera!

Anytime Rangers repair the Albaicin

Saturday, December 25, 2010

After a long day of researching the benefits of aqueducts at the Alhambra, the Anytime Rangers decided to make some repairs in the Albaicin.  Residents were grateful that the Anytime Rangers got the electricity back on just in time for Christmas day after a week of wet, stormy weather.

Anytime Rangers full of Andalusian love, take a break from a hard day of work…

Sierra Nevada

Skiing in the Sierra Nevada (Granada) after several days of snowing is a beautiful experience: powder, sun, Spain on one side and Africa on the other.

Farmacia hipnotica

This is the most inventive and creative pharmacy sign we’ve ever seen. It goes on forever and ever… and is always different!!!!

You were so nauseous going up to the Sierra Nevada, and so nauseous just for being pregnant… How about this???!!!!

This lollipop’s logo was designed in 1969 by Salvador Dali.  I must have had one every day while sitting in lecture at La Complutense many years ago.  What’s your favorite flavor?  I’ve always liked classic strawberry… but now I’m curious to go to Asia to try matcha latte or milk!

Nina bonita en Lavapies

Sunday, December 19, 2010

Lily is half Spanish half English.  Her mom Angela lived in Mexico City and taught English with me at IH.  Then she met Victor, a true chilango… and now there is beautiful Lily!  We were so happy to see all of our “British/Mexican” friends on our first night in Madrid.

Vanessa, our English friend who also used to live in Mexico City, took us to La Tabacalera.  This old tobacco factory in Lavapies has been taken over by artists and turned into a thriving place to make and learn.  There are many, many rooms and in each one some kind of activity is going on, such as sculpture and ceramic making, painting, dancing, fashion design… one room was screening a film, another was getting ready for a concert and in another there was a half-pipe with skaters doing their thing.  It was incredible to see young artists taking over a large, empty space to make art and share it with their community.

Bienvenidos!
